about us

The High School for Service Learning is a small school that prioritizes a tailored approach to education, promoting our students’ personal, professional, and academic growth. We empower students to be both college and career ready well-equipped to enter the workforce or pursue higher education, with a strong foundation of practical experience and academic achievement. Students have the unique opportunity to earn over a year's worth of college credits while still in high school through our partnerships with Brooklyn College, Medgar Evers College and Syracuse University. To prepare students for the workforce, our school is a FutureReady NYC and CareerReady Modern Youth Apprenticeship school offering job readiness training in Business, Finance, Technology and Healthcare. For students who express interest in other careers, we provide external resources in these fields as well. Through these programs students acquire 21st century employability skills including financial literacy, earn paid work based learning opportunities,  early college credits and credentials, and engage in 1-1 advising allowing students to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios.

 Dear HSSL Families,

I would like to welcome you all to the 2023- 2024 school year. It has been a pleasure to work with so many of you and I look forward to the relationships I will form with the new families. I am Denese Farkas, the proud principal of the High School for Service and Learning.

Here at HSSL, we are committed to ensuring that your child is in a safe and nurturing environment, is challenged with rigorous course material, and can develop their sense of individuality while learning to work as a team. I believe that great schools are the result of great teachers, and you and your child will find that the education found here upholds the highest level of integrity, continuous improvement and the pursuit of excellence.

To keep the lines of communication open, I implore you to engage in dialogue with administration, parent coordinator,  guidance counselors, and teachers so we can discuss how to best serve your child and their specific needs. Throughout this year we will utilize Jupiter, email, phone messenger and the newsletter to provide you with the most current information.

Lastly, I would invite each of you to become active members in our school community. Your volunteerism is encouraged and welcome. Opportunities include, but are not limited to, chaperoning field trips, becoming an active member of our PTA and/or School Leadership Team, and attending school wide events.

If I can ever be of assistance, please call the school at 718-564-2551 or email me at [email protected]. It is through being a collaborative learning community with consistent, honest, and open communication that I can best serve our students. Thanks for the opportunity to serve our great community as we welcome each of you to the High School for Service and Learning.

Sincerely,

Denese Farkas,
